Under this deceptively mundane title we can find some pretty special music, performed by the top pianist in the genre. Alicia de Larrocha was a pianist from Barcelona, famous for her performances of piano works by Spanish composers. She brought the music of Isaac Albéniz, Enrique Granados and Manuel de Falla to international attention, winning many awards. She is recognised as the greatest Spanish pianist that ever lived. There even is a crater on Mercury that bears her name.
The fragments on this records come from De Falla’s most famous works. Both were written when the composer was in Madrid, right before the first world war. The ballet El sombrero de tres picos was produced by Serge Dhiagilev, the famous rebel-rousing impresario that also gave birth to Stravinsky’s Rite of spring. The early twentieth century was musically an exciting time.
