A beautiful collection of piano works by Maurice Ravel. Well recorded and performed. Ravels oeuvre for piano takes an important place among his complete oeuvre: the composer was also pianist. I’d like to focus here on one of the works presented here: Le tombeau de Couperin.
Ravel wrote this six part work in 1919 as an hommage to friends that were fallen in the Great War. Each of the six parts is written to honor one friend, and the whole is written in a quasi historical baroque style. It is named after baroque composer François Couperin (1668-1733). Ravel himself wrote an orchestrated version of it.
