Debussy – Le quatuor à cordes / sonate pour flûte, alto et harpe / sonate pour violoncelle at piano

Discogs

Near the end of his life, Claude Debussy was working on six sonatas for different combinations of instruments. He ended up finishing three of them in the years from 1915 to 1917. This record presents two of these, along with his string quartet.

The sonata for cello and piano is more famous, and belongs to basic repertoire for the cello. But since I do not know that many examples of the combination, I was more curious about the sonata for flute, viola and harp. On Discogs the viola was badly translated into an alto clarinet, but alto is French for viola. It took me a while to find out about that!

It was originally meant to be for oboe instead, but by the time Debussy reached the third part it turned out the viola had a better place in the composition. The resulting combination proved to be musical gold, and since Debussy many more composers have tried their hand at it. I don’t think I own any of these.
