Bartók – Quartets 3 & 4

Discogs

This is not the most easiest of music to listen to, and I have it twice, or maybe even three times. When I was young, I told my mother I really liked to listen to music. I let her hear some of what I was listening to. Her reaction was: that must be lonely. This is the kind of music for lonely people. The structure just doesn’t lend itself to socialising, unless you do it with other music nerds.

It does help if you play an instrument yourself. I’ve been many times to performances of chamber music, and not only do I see a lot of older people, but also everybody is talking about it in the way of musicians. They know the techniques, they know what is played and how difficult it is. Some of the visitors have children that tag along, usually also playing instruments. It is a weird little niche.
