Schubert – Three violin sonatas

Discogs

Historical Informed Performers (HIP) Christopher Hogwood and Jaap Schröder play Schubert, a relatively late composer for them. I know them from baroque music, not from romantics like Schubert. I picked up later that the HIP movement was also performing Beethoven on period instruments, so why not Schubert?

It is quite interesting to hear Schubert being played on period instruments. Interesting, but I’m not getting overly enthusiastic about this. It is a bit too academic to my taste. I have discovered that with many of these recordings. Maybe studying the intentions of the composer so thoroughly makes the performed skip his own feelings? Technically these recordings are superior to whatever else you can find on the market. Both in sound quality and in technical skills. All of that doesn’t add that extra feeling in the music. It is just not there.
