Yo-Yo Ma recorded all the cello suites three times (so far). Most experts agree this is the best, the second recording, made in the early 80s. Since Bach didn’t add many directions for the performer, it is up to individual tastes of both performer and listener as to what is best. The differences can be huge. The melody might be the same, but changes in phrasing lead to different interpretations that can be like day and night.
I must own about ten of these recordings, and I do have my opinions on each of them. I think this first version of Yo-Yo Ma is almost too perfect. It is good, but not really adventurous. If you’ve never heard it, you might accept this is the reference performance. However, being the reference, it is good, but a bit middle of the road. Yo-Yo Ma’s own third recording, released in 2017 I think is much better. There he makes conscious choices, and also ones that not everybody likes. But I rather listen to a piece with character than one from the middle of the road.
Having said that, it is still nice to hear them on a record.
