Schubert – Songs for Gretchen, Ellen, & Suleika

Discogs

For the life of me, I’m trying to find out more about this work. Did Schubert write a work called Songs for Getchen, Ellen & Suleika? It took a while before I found out he did not. There are separate works, parts of other song cycles and from different stages of his life. The oldest is from 1815, the last he wrote from about 1825. So not one work, but several. I have been complaining so much about the titles of classical releases that I forget sometimes they do find a good title.

I am very impressed with this album. I found it on my streaming service, and have been listening to it a lot the last couple of days. They called Elly Ameling the Dutch nightingale, and she really was. A very light voice, jumping from note to note as if it is nothing, and scaling the heights and lows of the register. I already knew she was good, but this release does her credit. Recommended.
