In the later years of his life, Theodorakis was not only activist, but also active in politics. He was chosen as minister in 1990, but also ran as an independent candidate in a centre-right political party. A rather a-typical position to take for a leftist activist.
He beheld the US with great suspicion, and opposed the NATO bombardments of Serbia and Montenegro in 1999. Theodorakis died in 1921, after some years with a weak heart. He was 97 years old.
