This is confusing: here is number 7 of the Brazilian Bach suites, combined with number 6 of his Chôros. This is another series of compositions, written between 1920 and 1929. It follows the same idea as the Bachianas Brasileiras, only here Villa-Lobos is mimicking the music of street musicians playing a mix of African and European instruments. They were called chôro, after the Portuguese word for weeping.
The name is misleading, or badly translated here: French chœurs is not the same as chôros, and only one of the fourteen pieces was written for a choir. And it was not this one.
I bought this series of records because I was looking into the work of this remarkable Brazilian composer. I’m not at all into Brazilian music, in fact I detest most of it. In jazz I try to get around it as much as possible (so: ignoring you, Astrud!). This is good though, albeit in versions that are too old. Maybe find some more recent recordings.
