Spanish folk songs

Discogs

A collection of Spanish folk songs and Jewish songs sung by Victoria de los Angeles. The Jewish song tradition has always interested me. It has the familiarity of western music, but also uses harmonies that find their origin in the Middle East. The Sephardic Jews brought this into Spain and developed it there. It is this connection that I love very much about Spain.

Soprano Victoria de los Ángeles was born in 1923 in Barcelona. Right after the Spanish Civil War she had her operatic debut, playing the role of La Bohème’s Mimi in the Liceu Theatre of that city. Her biggest success were in the 50s and 60s. This album is a bit later, from 1971. She died at 81, surviving her husband and one of her sons. She is buried at Montjuïc Cemetery in Barcelona.

A beautiful recording of interesting arrangements, and certainly worth a listen. If you can find it.
