The original recording of the first two parts of Villa-Lobos series of Brazilian Bach interpretations. These are a set of nine suites composed with the same tricks Bach himself used, but using Brazilian rhythm and melodies.
When Villa-Lobos returned from his studies in Paris, he was immediately appointed to a leading position in musical education in Rio de Janeiro. The new government under president Getúlio Vargas wanted more focus on national culture, and expected artists of all kinds to participate. These nine compositions were Villa-Lobos’ contribution to the attempt.
On this record are the first two: a piece by an ensemble of cello’s (a minimum of 8, but it can also be for as much as 32). Part 2 is a four part suite for orchestra. Both were composed in 1930.
