I’ve written twice about the Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. This is the original, or rather, the restored original. It contains a small selection of the available songs in the manuscript.
The manuscript was found in 1803 in the Bavarian town of Benediktbeuern, but was in all likelihood not written there. The collection was made around 1230, probably in Tirol, and ended up in Bavaria when the two were governed by the same family.
In total there are 228 songs in the manuscript, including love songs, songs about gambling, drinking and games. Most of these contain rather spicy imagery. They are in a total of four local languages, which is why we can localize its origin.
