In person, Friday night at the Blackhawk

Discogs

A superb piece of live jazz, this album captures a short lived Miles Davis Quintet playing at the Black Hawk Night Club in San Fransisco. It features Davis playing with some of his regulars, but also with a very interesting Hank Mobley on tenor sax. Somehow I find him easier than his more famous companion John Coltrane. This record is part of a larger set, consisting of a Friday and a Saturday night.

The Black Hawk (written with and without the space) was an intimate jazz venue that existed between 1949 and 1963 in the Tenderloin district of downtown San Fransisco. It was ideal for small jazz ensembles and there were many recordings made there. As a curiosity, it featured a cage with woven wire fencing, to allow persons under 21, who are not allowed to drink alcohol in the state, to still experience jazz concerts.
