Ravel / Martinů – Duos für Violine und Violoncello

Discogs

A Sonata for cello and violin by Ravel, and two Duos by Martinů, played by an unlikely couple. From what I can find Pina Carmirelli was a violinist, born in 1914, playing with cellist Philippe Muller, more than thirty years her junior. She had her first career already before the war, while he still had to start. It might have been a masterclass that brought them together, but they’re not playing the same instrument. Muller is still alive, Carmirelli died in 1993.

I wish I could tell you this is beautiful work. I think it is the combination that just doesn’t do it for me. It might also be the sonata form that leads to technically and intellectually challenging but not engaging music (for me). This is musician’s music. It might be interesting to play in a duo with a violin though, I would like to try that.
