Thelonious Monk is seen as one of the founders of bebop. He was born in 1917, so by the end of the war, he already had a long career. He was able to secure a good deal with Blue Note, but his records were deemed too difficult and didn’t sell. By the 50s he found himself in a good position, having befriended the rich patron of New York jazz baroness Pannonica “Nica” de Koenigswarter, a member of the Rothschild family. Also, he had good contacts in the industry.

I don’t intend to belittle his music or his talent. Monk is rightly famous and influential. He also was wearing distinctive clothing on (and off) stage, like suits, hats and sunglasses. Things that are now considered part and parcel of the jazz scene.

This special Record Store Day edition includes a reproduction of the original poster for the concert, and a so called Obi strip. Obi is the sash around a Japanese kimono, and is the term used for the wrapper around albums sold in that country. It allows Japanese translations of the title, with respect for the original. Obviously, this one is not Japanese.
