We is Arcade Fire’s sixth album, released in 2022. It is the result of the band’s lockdown during the Covid pandemic, and inspired by the dystopian novel We by Yevgeny Zamyatin. I feel there are clear connections between those two. Both take place in an enclosed world, and both are ruled by science. The book was one of the first dystopian novels, and is highly influential: both Huxley’s Brave new world and Orwell’s 1984 owe a lot to it. Somehow it reminds me of the movie Equilibrium.
The album is entertaining, but is not as good as previous albums of the band. I think the first three albums are really worth it, but after that the band went in decline. The accompanying artwork is really beautiful though, including a small postcard that was sent to fans right before it was released.
