The Russian cellist Sviatoslav Knushevitsky was born in 1908 and was the principal cellist of the Bolshoi orchestra from 1929 onwards. His real fame came when he joined the violinist David Oistrakh, along with pianist Lev Oborin in 1940, forming what is known as the Oistrakh Trio. He is seen as one of the best Russian cellists of the last century. Aged 55 Knushevitsky died an early death, also caused by excessive alcohol use.

Piano trios are not that common in classical music. There are some famous examples (Schubert, Dvořák, Ravel… ) but many composers didn’t dare touch the genre. It is not easy to get the instruments to sound balanced I guess. These two are not on the top of any list, yet it is interesting to note they were both composed by Russian composers that tried to bridge the gap with western music, even though they tried so in different times.
