A record that was released in 1975, but containing a recording from 1951. I suppose it was later remastered into fake stereo, because back in 1951 stereo was not commercially available. Gieseking had died in 1956, so this is definitely old stock. On Spotify the recording is relegated to the relaxing background sounds section.
Walter Gieseking was born before the turn of the century, and had a promising career early in his life. And then the war broke out. According to pianist Arthur Rubinstein he told him he was a dedicated Nazi. He also played for the Nazi’s and dreamt of playing for Hitler. After the war he was put on a list of banned artists, but he was removed from there by the Americans. He was able to play in America, but I can imagine this story was known.
