Two piano concerts by Mozart, both composed in Vienna in 1785. Number 20 is one of only two in a minor key. It has a dark atmosphere, but ends in a major key. This is what Beethoven did a lot: dramatic start and middle portions, leading up to a positive ending. It is no wonder that he admired it greatly and wrote cadenzas for it.
The second on this record is the famous Elvira Madigan. I must say that I thought I recognised it while I was listening, but to my amazement it was not announced as such on the cover. Usually it is screamed to boost the sales, but not so much here. There is hope for the world yet.
Japanese-British pianist Mitsuko Uchida has recorded all Mozart sonatas and concertos with Jeffrey Tate and the English Chamber Orchestra in the 80s. The series is seen as reference, and it led her to do it again later, with the Cleveland Orchestra. I didn’t do the comparison. To be honest: Mozart, not really my thing.
