Janáček – Glagolitic mass

Discogs

Czech composer Leoš Janáček’s pan-Slavist liturgical work, for double chorus and soloists. The Glagolitic alphabet is an early form of Cyrillic. In Croatia, the Catholic Church gave permission for the use of old church Slavonic in masses, instead of the usual Latin. The resulting mass was called Glagolitic.

Janáček wrote this impressive composition in 1926 and it was premiered in December 1927. As much a lover of liturgical works as I am, it has never quite appealed to me. Mister Sir Simon Rattle does what he can, the performance is not to blame. It just doesn’t speak to me.
