Dvořák – Streichquartett Nr 8 G-dur Op 106

Is number 8 the same as number 13? It looks that way. It might also have been a mistake on the side of the publisher. A mistake that was later corrected in the streaming editions. Curiously, not in the re-release on 180g vinyl of an unknown date (I’m pretty sure it is from later than 2000, because of the medium).

I’m trying to find anything about this numbering mixup. Dvořák and his publishers caused a lot of inconsistencies in the numbering, both on the opus and on the composition numbers. The catalogue number B is supposed to fix all that. B stands for Burghauser, who published a catalogue in 1960. I didn’t find any inconsistency with this though: number 13 should just be that. So where is that number 8 coming from?

Numbering aside, this is a superb recording. The work is interesting, the last chamber music composition from Dvořák. Performance is convincing for me, but I have not compared it much. The recording is just outstanding, and I’m not surprised this was re-released on 180g later: it is worth a listen.
