German electro pioneer Manuel Göttsching released this almost an hour long work in 1981. With the trailblazers from the 50s, Germany has a good tradition in electronic music. With E2-E4 Göttsching continues that by creating a highly influential work that keeps inspiring techno DJs all over the world.
It might have gone unnoticed, but it was picked up in New York by dance club Paradise Garage, and it quickly became a hit there. It was sampled in all kind of shapes and sizes, including the popular version by Italian house band Sueño Latino in 1989.
When I listened to this I didn’t expect it to be so minimalistic. The wiki page mentions Steve Reich as an influence, and the sound of that minimal music composer is noticeable. Maybe this is a brdige between classical music and dance? Göttschig expressed his surprise when he learned that people actually danced to it. Göttsching died in December 2022, aged 70.
