One man show Noord West

Discogs

My older sister once took me to a comedy show of Paul van Vliet in the Stadsschouwburg in Haarlem. It was the first time ever I was in a theatre. I doubt it was this one, because from what I can see this is from the early 70s. He followed the tradition of another Dutch comedian in calling his shows one man shows. They were a series of short sketches, usually creating on stage characters with funny voices and expressions, mixed with songs.

The older he got, the better he was known for his deep voice. For my generation it was instantly recognisable. His shows and his writing was not very engaged, and also was fairly pro-monarchy (he was a personal friend of Queen Beatrix). During the late 70s and 80s it was not very fashionable in socialist circles to be like that. As a result he was not to everyone’s liking, but his songs survived the test of time. There are some on this record, in particular De zee and Zeven kleine liefdesliedjes.

I once got one of his books from my sister as a present. On the first page she wrote I have the records, you have his book. I still remember that, even though I don’t have the book anymore. I’m left with his records now.
