Even though I have this in my collection, I don’t know that much about it. So I call wikipedia to the rescue. This is their debut album, from 1988, with the the first hit single “Shattered dreams”. So much I knew already. Listening doesn’t make it better. Then there was “sophisti pop”.
Not my favourite, but I checked the term. Turns out there really are connections between the artists mentioned there. Yes, this is smooth music, polished. The other bands in this category are equally smooth. Hatefully so. Sade, Simply Red, Spandau Ballet, Level 42.
