Fra Holbergs Tid, this work was actually called. Grieg wrote it in 1884 to commemorate the 200th birth year of humanist Ludvig Holberg. It is neo classical work that tries to mimic older musical styles: From the time of Holberg.

There is a collection of these kind of works on this record. All orchestral suites. For the untrained ear they might resemble symphonies, but these are totally different in structure and how they feel. A symphony has a more rigid form from the classical sonata: theme, development, recapitulation. A suite is more loose collection of short dances.

So the Holberg Suite has these dances in their old names: sarabande, gavotte, air, rigaudon. Preceded by an introduction. A bit like in the baroque time.
