Schumann’s second (1847) and third (1851) piano trios, presented here by the Abegg Trio. Founded in 1976 at the Hochschule für Music und Theater in Hannover, they existed for 41 years in the same line up, before disbanding in 2017.
The name Abegg was chosen as a reference to one of Schumann’s works: variations on the name Abegg. Who Abegg originally was, remains a mystery. Why this piano piece was chosen by a Trio is a mystery to me.
The Abegg Trio also recorded the Trio in g minor op 17 by Clara Schumann. I’m listening to that right now. A challenge: try to find that on Spotify.
