Beethoven – Die fünf Klavierkonzerte / Chorfantasie C-moll Op. 80

Discogs

Grandpa Otto Klemperer with a in 1967 still very young Daniel Barenboim. They already recorded the sonatas for EMI, so they might just as well do the concertos as well. The combination is supposed to be made in heaven, but somehow it is not working for me. There is just something off with the recording, or maybe with the performance. While I’m writing this I’m listening to the streaming version, and it has the same issue.

The five concertos are accompanied by a twenty minutes long choral piece called Choral Fantasy. I didn’t know this work, but it shows quite as lot of resemblance to the later Ode to Joy from the ninth symphony. The Ode to Joy was written 14 years later, but this Choral Fantasy is seen as an early variation of the theme.
