Johannes Sigmond grew up in the evangelical church in the Dutch city of Arnhem. In this church singing and making music were highly valued, so Johannes and his younger brother Jacob both started early. They played together in the church band, and later his brother is still part of Johannes’ own band. As a stage name he chose the name of an obscure professional cyclist from the Eighties, a Danish man called Verner Blaudzun.
Blaudzun had a performance at Lowlands in 2011, right before this album came out. I saw him there, but I already knew him from a television show. I remember I found the performance a bit disappointing, but the album is still very good. The high pitched voice is not for everyone though.
