Tschaikowsky – Erinnerungen an Florenz

Discogs

This is the tune of the weekly television show about classical music that is broadcast in the Netherlands. A cheerful tune, in a good performance and well recorded. And still, ever since I heard the recording of this by the Amsterdam Sinfonietta that appeared in 2004, it just pales in comparison. Let me put it here so you can compare!

A difference between these two is also that the second one is performed by a string orchestra, while the first is a sextet. In fact it is the only sextet Tchaikovsky wrote. He wrote it as a thank you note for the St Petersburg Chamber Music Society, for making him an honorary member. Tchaikovsky was visiting Florence. He was also in the process of his popular opera Queen of spades (coming up soon…).
