Rakhmaninov – Corelli variations op 42 / Six moments musicaux op 16

Two of my favorite works of Rachmaninov, written for piano. I like the genre of the variations. It has all the benefits of musical repetition without the drawbacks. The composer sets the tune at the start, and then travels through a whole host of increasingly different variations. Sometimes that road ends with the theme where it all started, but not always.

My praise for this record is more about the quality of the recording though. Nimbus records really showed how it’s done here. The clarity and detail of the sound is superb, as is the performance itself. I’m not surprised about not finding it on Spotify, I think the whole catalogue of that label is not streamed. You can buy it on their website, I suppose.
