Jörg Baumann was the principal cellist of the Berliner Philharmoniker from 1976 until his death in 1995. He also founded the ensemble of the 12 cellists from that orchestra. They are still touring and I have seen them. It is very impressive to see 12 cellists on stage, not to mention listening to them!
Baumann recorded the suites in the early 80s, and they were collectively released in 1985. This record only holds the first two suites. The performance is well done, though a little bit traditional to my taste. The recording is a bit of a disappointment. Somehow I’m expecting better for this time: the early 80s had real good recording technique, and this was released on Teldec DMM, in my opinion one of the best media available. But it still sounds slightly old. Bad mastering I think. It is available on Spotify, so for you to judge.
