Paul Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis is an adaptation of themes by Carl Maria von Weber, originally meant for ballet. It was written in 1943, on a suggestion by dancer and choreographer Léonide Massine. When shown in 1940, Massine didn’t like the result and told Hindemith he liked Von Weber’s version better. Three years later Hindemith created a symphonic version of it instead. It was made into a ballet by George Balanchine after the war, but that was not a big success. It is not a pice you’ll be likely to hear, and when looking for it Spotify gave me results for Mathis der Mahler instead. Granted, that is Hindemith’s best known work.
It is an interesting work I think, and certainly worth a listen, if you can find it. It is also quintessential American. Although thematically grounded in the European tradition, it’s instrumentation crosses the big pond. Americans love brass! This sounds more like a film score than a variation on Von Weber.
