This record collection by the Beaux Arts Trio might as much be defined by what it contains as to what it doesn’t. The link to Spotify is not correct, but does contain most of the recordings in the box. The limited genre of the piano trio is broken on the last two discs, by including Schubert’s Trout and Schumann’s quartet and quintet.
My experience with chamber music started with the heady piano trios of Rachmaninov. I bought them on CD, performed by this very same trio. It is a good recording, but it was made in 1987, later than this collection. But I also think the inclusion of those Schubert and Schumann works makes this collection sell better. Trios are a bit more challenging than these old time favorites.
An impressive collection, just the same. Well recorded and performed, a joy to listen to.
