This is the fourth recording I have of this combination: The Orlando Quartet, The Borodin Quartet and The Talich and Debussy Quartets went before. I’ve listened to these quite far apart. This is a disadvantage of the way I organise my collection. Many people would put these records together, so that one can see them, and know they’re there. I am not even aware of this.
I have no problem with this many recording of the same work. I think this presents two of the highlights of the French string quartet literature, and of impressionism to boot. Both composers would turn in their graves if they knew they would forever be known as impressionist composers though. They really didn’t like the classification. I’m sorry guys, dometimes you just need an outsider to judge your music.
