Revue in the Netherlands comes from its French counterpart. In many countries it has a different meaning. The Dutch revue is a form of entertainment theater where satire and light humor is coupled with song and dance. At the end of the 19th century it started, mostly in small local theaters. In the 60s of the next century it had mostly disappeared, taken over by television.
TV and radio took over its fair share of it though, and when I was young the Snip & Snap act was still on the radio, even though it was thought of as old fashioned. Willy Walden en Piet Muyselaar started it in 1937, more or less by accident. They dressed up as two ladies that didn’t really like each other, but, like neighbors always ended up talking to each other. Outwitting each other, more like. They were doing it until well in the 70s.
I don’t remember too much about the details, but when I was young and visiting my family I was presented with one of these. It indeed sounded old fashioned to me, but the memory stayed. I can still remember the voice saying “Het is niet m’n broer…”. It is funny to hear that voice again on this record.
