Finzi – Cello concerto

Discogs

The only cello concerto by the British composer Gerald Finzi. He composed it in 1955, a year before his untimely death at the age of 55. Finzi is mostly known for his choral works based on literary works of English writers. He was also a collector of these books, having amassed around 3000 when he died.

Both works on this record I find interesting, but the side B slightly more. Kenneth Leighton was a friend of Finzi. Thirty years his junior, Finzi was able to support him in his earliest years. The piece showcased here is undoubtedly the result of this. It certainly shows traces of that influence, but is also more modern and adventurous.

This is a superb recording by the English label Chandos. They have been responsible for many good recordings in the past. Recommended.
