Ornette Coleman is seen as the father of free jazz. That genre developed from the bop in the late 50s, leaving aside strict harmonics and chord progressions. It kept the same meter, but played around with it a little. While most jazz is American, in its later incarnations free jazz added influences from other parts of the world, including the use of exotic instruments.

Although free jazz doesn’t have a good reputation for me, I do like this album. It might be this particular album is just the first step in that direction, and the real intellectual chaos is just to follow in its footsteps. I call it chaos, because I just cannot follow there anymore. I call it intellectual because from a musical theory standpoint it has some interesting features that I understand, but cannot follow when listening to it. This album doesn’t suffer from that yet.
