Dark fire

Discogs

In the liner notes cellist Joachim Eijlander explains what Dark fire means. According to the philosopher Martin Heidegger the meeting between Greek philosophy and the world of the East sparked a dark fire. For Eijlander this is the inspiration behind a search into musical connections between East and West.

About half of this double album is solo work by the cellist. In itself interesting, chamber works from 20th century composers that were both living in a balance between the world of Islam and Christianity. One from Turkey and the other from Catalonia.

It is the other half of this album where it really gets traction though: Eijlander plays duets with accordeon, guitar and duduk. It is these combinations that really make me love this record. I didn’t known the cellist before, and Ii haven’t heard anything else from him, but this is a wonderful record, and one that I have listened to a lot.
