The 3rd serial from the 3rd season of Doctor Who, aired September/Oktober 1965. With this we’re really going back in time. Story editor David Spooner reacted to a viewer with an idea by giving the writing commission to him. Australian schoolteacher William Emms wrote a story where expectations were twisted around: beautiful was bad and ugly was good.
The crew of the Tardis, the ship of the Doctor) lands on a silent planet that is fought over by two races. One consists of only beautiful women, the other a race that looks like warthogs and use telepathy to communicate. They have arrived on the planet, and cannot leave anymore. They have to escape it however, as the planet is going to explode. The story is about who to help and who to leave on the exploding planet. It all ends with genocide. Those 60s.
After the last couple of stories from the 70s, I find it hard to hear this older version of the series. The 60s really were a different age, and this is a good way to remind us of that. These old Doctor Who stories are interesting as a time capsule.
