Les Adieux might be a mistake in translation. Beethoven himself wrote on the autograph Lebewohl, the German for farewell. The sonata was written in 1809/10, when Napoleon’s troops outside of Vienna forced archduke Rudolph to leave the city. It might have been referring to saying farwell to the man, but the French “adieux” is plural, meaning more people than just Rudolph. No matter how royally we he might have been. The other two sonatas are a bit better known: the Appassionata and the Moonlight sonatas. Both were not named by the composer and were composed a few years earlier.
The record is a bit damaged I think. A pity, because I like the sound of the recordings from this label. I’m pretty sure I cleaned it already, but in this case the damage is just too much. The seller promised a bit better quality, but I can imagine: the vinyl looks pristine.
