This was not the first time Art Blakey got together a bunch of jazz cats to record the title song. It featured already on his first record in 1954, and would again be recorded three years later in a whole different line up. The 1960/1 recording is actually the most famous, recorded in Rudy van Gelder’s studio, and published by Blue Note. This one is not that, but still quite good. The title song was actually composed by Dizzy Gillespie in 1942. He just called it Interlude, but when he presented his version in 1954, Blakey told the audience that he was there when Gillespie wrote it at the bottom of a garbage can, in Texas.
I like the looks of this album, but somehow I cannot find myself in the music itself. My print is from 1998, on 180 grams vinyl. Now it would be remastered as well, but this one is not mentioning that. Does that really mean nothing was done to the sound from the 1958 recording? I doubt it, but I cannot find any proof either way.
