The Corps of Royal Engineers are the engineers, or sappers, of the British army. They trace their origins back to the time of William the Conqueror. They never got battle honours, but function as a support unit. The nickname sappers comes from the French saper, to undermine: digging tunnels under a city wall to cause them to cave in.
I suppose with armies comes marching, and I’m not a specialist in that, but it turns out you can do that best on music. So they Corps has its own band. This recording is from 1971, but I see they’re still publishing records of similar work. This record is pretty unique in my collection, and I have no idea what got me into buying it. It is a funny distraction though.
