These works were explicitly meant for ambitious pianists at home. Debussy wrote these two books between 1909 and 1912, so we arrived comfortably in the twentieth century. And with that belongs a different kind of music. Although Debussy hated being called impressionist, the term sticks.
Although these are two books of 12 pieces each, the 24 pieces do not use all the different keys, like Chopin or Bach did. To put the focus on the music, the composer put the title of each piece after the music. Sure Claude, that makes the difference.
Monique Haas was born in the same year Debussy started on these works. She specialised in the French music of the twentieth century, with a complete recording of Debussy’s piano repertoire. She died in 1987.
