Never mess with the gypsies, that is what this opera is all about. A story told to some guards to keep them awake, has more truth in it than the main characters of this opera would like. In the end, a jealous count kills a mysterious troubadour over the love if a woman. Only to find out he just killed his own brother, a truth concealed for years by an old gypsy woman.
The opera is based on García Gutiérrez’ play from 1836, reworked by Salvadore Cammarano, Verdi’s librettist. The opera premiered in Rome in January 1853. Yes, that is the same year as La Traviata, the opera I wrote about yesterday.
Another fabulous recording, with a beautiful cast. I was on a roll in this time!
