The Adderley brothers, with Yusef Lateef, Sam Jones, Louis Hayes and Joe Zawinol performing in the Village Vanguard in New York. A recording made in 1962, that makes this recording extremely late for its style. Bebop was developed during the Forties by Coleman Hawkins and Charlie Parker. It is based on a four part beat without any swing like syncopation. There is usually no singing, and there is a leading theme that goes around the band. The big names in the genre are Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus and Miles Davis.

I remember this record was always sounding very good, but maybe I’m used to better lately. It is an original, not a reprint, so maybe the grooves are just a bit worn. Still, if you are tired of the same old same old of jazz, this might be a new experience. Recommended.
