Schumann – Klavierkonzert / Kinderszenen Op 15

Discogs

For the Kinderszenen this is the same recording as this one, but here it is combined with a concerto. I find the earlier record a better combination. The Kinderszenen is a collection of thirteen pieces out of a total of thirty, written by Robert Schumann in reaction to his wife calling him childish. That remark resulted in a large collection of small pieces, all of them around simple themes.

The seventh part is Träumerei, maybe Schumann’s most famous composition. It has been used in movies, but also on the Russian memorial day for the Great Patriotic War (WW II), when it is hummed by an a-capella choir. A very young childhood memory I have lets me lie on the couch in my parent’s living room, listening to it. One of those few moments my mother was listening to classical music.
