Though born in Glasgow in 1946, Donovan Leitch might be considered the British answer to Bob Dylan. His songs follow a similar pattern of protesting / complaining about the life and times of the 60s. Donovan does add a bit more of the flower power that started the end of that decade. A good example of his style, and also a big hit for him is Universal soldier. That however, was not written by him.
At the start of the 80s, Donovan had run his course. His mix of beatnik’s On the road philosophy and anti war activism was old fashioned in the coming wave of punk rock acts. And that is mostly how I know him: representing a different age. He did not age well in that time. In the 90s he tried again with a record produced by Rick – Johnny Cash – Rubin, but the market couldn’t handle both him and the man in black at the same time. A classic case of bad timing.
