Violinist Emmy Verhey was considered a child prodigy, getting her first lessons from her father when she was seven years old, and playing Bach concertos a year later. The wiki page goes on and on about her success. To my memory she was quite the thing for a while, and then somehow she was forgotten. And now that I’ve heard this record, I don’t understand why. This is a superb recording, and well performed.
Verhey was born right after the war in Amsterdam, and active on the podium since she was 17. That year she won a prize at the Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow. In her time she played both a Stradivarius and a Guarneri violin. I didn’t find any information on this record about the instrument she is playing here. I don’t think I would hear the difference between the two, I’m afraid.
