De Falla – Nights in the gardens of Spain

Discogs

A nocturne in three parts, for piano and orchestra. The Spanish composer Manuel de Falla composed it between 1909 and 1915, at first as a solo piano piece. The rhythms in the piece are very Spanish, the harmonics less so. It feels very much like a French nocturne, and for that it came rather late. And that fits, because De Falla was living in Paris until the start of the first World War. The premiere took place in Madrid in 1916.

This recording was made in 1970 in Switzerland, with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande under Sergiu Comissiona. In 1984 De Larrocha did another recording, this time with the London Philharmonic under Rafael de Burgos. I have compared the two on my streamer, and that later version is a bit more outgoing than this one. Also, less French in colouring.

About a hundred years later, I visited the Alhambra and the Generalife, the subject of the frist part of this nocturne. It was not during the night, but even so, the music fits.
