Moscheles

Discogs

Bohemian composer Ignaz Moscheles was trained by Salieri, the teacher made (in)famous by Mozart’s biopic Amadeus. He was still young when Beethoven had his greatest moments, and he transcribed his opera Fidelio for pianoforte. This is his third pianoconcerto, here mistakenly opussed as 58, but now carrying the number 60.

That is not the only mistake printed on the cover of this record. The painting on the front is mistakenly called The virgin, by Gustav Klimt. The painting is Klimt’s, sure, but is DanaĆ«, painted in 1907. The painting shows DanaĆ«, the mother of Perseus. One night she is visited by Zeus, making her pregnant. The painting shows the moment of her ecstasy, with Zeus shows as the golden leaves flowing between her legs.

Not only is the title wrongly stated, but what on earth the painting has to do with the music? The dates of both works of art lie apart 83 years, so it is not even that. The concert itself is surprisingly good, and worth a listen.
